Are You Cyber Monday

Are You Cyber Monday Ready?

Kickstart the Holidays with Cyber Monday
and Use the Momentum to Build Success!

Now is the time to take advantage of the Cyber Monday traffic surge by publishing great articles, such as product reviews, how-to/DIY articles, top strategies, checklists, saving tips, and more. Use the momentum of Cyber Monday to propel yourself into the holidays to snowball your success.
What Is Cyber Monday?
Close on the heels of Black Friday (the largest shopping day in the U.S.), Cyber Monday is considered the biggest online shopping day of the year and it lands on Monday, December 2nd this year. Cyber Monday's popularity increased so much in recent years that many businesses have decided to extend it into Cyber Week by offering deals, events, and promotions for at least 5 full business days.
8 Tips to Get Ready for Cyber Monday
  • Establish what deals you will have and set a specific goal. For example, if you know for every 100 views of one article that you sell an average of 10 items and your goal for Cyber Monday is to sell 100 items, then your goal is to have 1,000 targeted views.
  • Determine your message by differentiating yourself from the crowd. Consider your unique value proposition (what makes your offer honestly the best) and how you can present it in an engaging, personable way to your audience.
  • Spread the word by considering how you will inform your current and prospective audience, such as emails, blogs, tweets, social media updates, pins, etc.
  • Do not SPAM your audience. Find balance by ensuring you're providing quality, relevant, and valuable information that is welcome.
  • Be smart and specific about your word choice. For example, "great deals" or "holiday sale" may not have as much impact as "Cyber Monday Deals," "Cyber Monday Specials," or "Cyber Week Deals."
  • Use eye-catching, attractive titles to pull readers in and avoid gimmicky titles like "Don't Miss Your Chance!" or "You'll Wish You Didn't Miss This Opportunity!"
  • Check, double check, and triple check to ensure you have a great call-to-action that clearly compels your visitor to act.
  • Track your data using your goals as a guide. Knowing article views, bounce rates, social media engagement stats, peak traffic times, audience demographics, and more can help you measure your success and tweak your strategy for next year.

Now Is Your Opportunity

Keywords Have Evolved:
Now Is Your Opportunity
To Shine With the Long Tail
EzineArticles.com Logo

Quality Content Still Reigns
It's over! The preoccupation with understanding and using keywords is no longer a battle for new and experienced content creators and Expert Authors.
What's changed?
Article writing and content creation for online users has undergone a major shift from the early days of keyword discovery and later aggressive keyword regulation. Many of us have collectively breathed a sigh of relief as the emphasis is back on quality content over keyword-riddled junk because search engines have improved their ability to connect a user's conversational long-tail queries with quality and original content.
What does this mean for you?
You have an opportunity to shine.
Before we get into the "how to," let's take a quick step back in keyword history.
A (Tongue-in-Cheek) Brief History of Keyword Usage
Many content creators have wisely (and not so wisely) used keyword practices as a part of their content marketing strategy over the years. What began with good intentions to increase their ability to be searched by their target audiences soon became a hotbed of questionable black hat SEO tactics as content creators (knowingly and unknowingly) allowed themselves to be drawn in by poor "quick 'n easy" promises. Let's take a closer look:
  • Keywords Discovered: "Hey, these keywords are neat and helped me show up on page one. I think I will use more of them."
  • Keyword Clouds: "I'll place a widget 'cloud' of words on my page to help search engines understand what my page is all about. Look! I can even make the words spin and interact with users!"
  • Keyword Glut: "I NEED MORE KEYWORDS! I'll just stuff them here, there, everywhere and then I will rule the search - mwhahahahaha!"
  • Keywords Spun: "Quantity is so much better than quality! I'll write dozens of articles covering the same topic and alter the text ever so slightly. It's not exactly identical, but it targets the same keywords at least."
  • Keywords Regulated: "STOP! This is the keyword police. Your content is under arrest. You are allowed one keyword or keyword phrase for every one hundred words. Failure to comply will result in suspension and de-indexing."
  • Keywords Evolved.
How Users, Publishers, and Search Engines Were Affected
Internet users hated the early days of keyword glut and spinning.
Search became a game of keyword roulette because poor quality would often outrank quality content, but what else could they do? Not use the Internet was out of the question, so they either accepted it as the way things were or they experimented with different search engines and social media.
Publishers disliked it too.
Targeting keywords over providing a good user experience and informative content cheapened the quality and value of the publisher's platforms. As a result, publishers attempted to fend off spam by establishing keyword checkpoints that blocked poor quality content and rewarded good quality content. Unfortunately, this made it more difficult for Expert Authors to publish.
Search engines were in hot water.
Internet users "putting up" with poor quality content wasn't acceptable, nor was allowing derivative, spun content driven by popular keywords to game the system. Search engines strived to provide a great user experience and found a way by improving semantic search and rewarding quality content. Their innovation has led to the evolution of keywords.
Current Affairs and the Long Tail
While keywords continue to have their place, the landscape has changed. Through the use of smarter synonym tools as well as the fine-tuning of co-occurrence contextual recognition tools, search engines are now more in tune with the needs of users and are better at understanding the relationships between indexed content, keywords, and user search queries.
For Expert Authors like yourself, this means you have the opportunity for your existing and future quality content to do well. This is especially true if you have strong brand, link, social, and user signals as well as target long-tail user queries, which are ranking higher than ever before because they emulate the practices of natural, conversational speech used by your audience.
The long tail depicts the frequency with which a topic occurs and its demand. Let's take a closer look.
There are three main parts of the long-tail concept: the head, the middle, and the tail.
  • Head: At the top of the curve, the Head targets a large audience with a high content saturation, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss").
  • Middle: Connecting the head and the tail, the Middle moderately targets an audience with an average content saturation, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss for Women" and "Weight Loss for Women Over 40").
  • Tail: The Tail targets a highly focused audience with content that's in low supply, demand, and competition (e.g., "Weight Loss for Women Over 40: Top 7 Quick, Easy, and Painless Tips to Drop a Dress Size or More!)".
By targeting your audience and creating content along the long tail, you will increase the likelihood of your articles being seen by readers.
Don't Dump the Overall Concept of Keywords Entirely
Of course, you shouldn't throw out good keyword strategies such as integrating great keywords into your titles naturally and writing articles contextually relevant to search queries based on user demand. Find balance. Provide rich, informative content that focuses on the reader both on and off your website. Create strong social signals by engaging with your audience on social media (via discussions, sharing, etc.). And finally, implement good keyword strategies that help (not hinder) your success.
Go on! Take this opportunity to shine by brainstorming long-tail article titles, allow your experience to come forth, and let the keywords take a break. Refocus on writing creative, engaging, informative content that really connects with readers.

Bruce Kaler M.D. "... establish your voice and brand ..." The marketing principle of giving away of something of value for free in order to sell something else, resonated with me. It is also a way to establish your voice and brand in a more structured professional manner than typical social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, et al. They have their place and are useful to an author/writer. However, the growth of the internet creates a huge demand for quality content. I still think the key is to write "quality content". If it is well written, accessible, and of timely interest to people it will get plenty of attention. EzineArticles is a wonderful reservoir of good content on many topics.

Overwhelmed?

Overwhelmed? Break BIG Goals
Into Manageable Chunks
EzineArticles.com Logo

Become a Goal Achiever
"Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off the goal." - Henry Ford
Are you feeling overwhelmed? Does it seem like there are constant obstacles in your path? Do you imagine some maniacal being is sabotaging you by thwarting your progress?
An Expert Author recently expressed this same frustration, stating it's easy to make goals, visualize yourself meeting them, but actually doing it during the daily grind is another story.
I'm going to share with you what I shared with her: Whether your goal is to write a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo or publish 30 articles by the end of the month, you can set actionable steps to feasibly achieve your goals by chunking.
What Is Chunking?
Chunking is the process of dividing something into smaller chunks. You can chunk down to create actionable steps and chunk up to prioritize your efforts.
Think of it like you're looking at a forest:
  • Chunk Down: See the forest (goal) for the trees (details). Consider the elements and details that make the goal whole.
  • Chunk Up: See the forest (goal) as a whole. Avoid getting so wrapped up in the details that you lose sight of the big picture.
How Do You Do It?
Chunking down is best done with a map as a guide. Here's how to make your map:
  • Once you've established your goal, write it down.
  • Chunk down by writing all of the steps and elements you need to take to get there.
  • Draw arrows indicating the order of events between the steps.
For example, let's say I want to publish 30 articles by the end of the month. Here's what my map (in part) may look like:
Once you have a map detailing the chain of events needed to achieve your goal, move forward by planning a timetable.
When Do You Do It?
Once you've established a road map, chunk your time by creating a timetable. Of course, be realistic with the timetable, but be okay with a challenge. Push the limit!
For example, I know I take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to draft an article of 700-1,000 words. This estimate may be less with zero distractions, but I'm never 100% distraction free so I'm giving myself a little wiggle room. I usually will take an additional 30 minutes to revise, edit, proofread, and perform final edits. To submit and publish, I will allot at least 5 minutes to ensure all of the information in the Write & Edit submission form of my account is correct. I'll also take 10 minutes to prepare a few social media posts to be ready to promote the article once it's live. From start to finish, I clock 2 hours and 15 minutes for one article.
To write 30 articles (to meet my goal), I will need to allot 67 hours and 30 minutes for the duration of one month. Since I have various non-writing duties and priorities (as well as a few holidays this month), I need to chunk out my writing schedule to accommodate my writing goal accordingly.
First, I've estimated the duration of my daily writing sessions to determine how much time each day I will be dedicating to writing:
  • 1 article = 2 hours and 15 minutes
  • 2 articles = 4 hours and 30 minutes
  • 3 articles = 6 hours and 45 minutes
Next, I'll create a timetable to stay on the ball. I'll also share this with my team, family, and friends to secure their support.
Based on this timetable, I'll have written 30 articles by day 25 with planned catch-up days (in case my writing sessions are interrupted and I go over the time I allot myself) as well as breaks to refresh and celebrate holidays with my family.
The next step: Do it!
It's never too late to get on track with your goals. When you break goals into doable chunks, it's much easier and more motivating to achieve them. Set a goal, apply the chunking method, embrace it by taking action, and don't take your eyes off the goal!
What method do you use to achieve your goals? Click here to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

Embrace the Truth

Embrace the Truth: Your Brand Doesn't Really Matter to Readers EzineArticles.com Logo

You Can Rise Above the Noise
It's a hard truth: brands are ceasing to matter because they aren't as important as the truth. Good and bad, readers, clients, and consumers really want that truth broken to them by someone they can connect with: A fellow human.
Just Your Average Brand
Brands are everywhere. They're not only on store shelves; they're on the billboards of our commute, on our phones, on our coffee mugs, on our shoes, on our social media page, and much more. After a while, all of these brands begin to blur into the same promises and same old delivery. Which makes you stop to wonder: Do we actually see these brands and do we truly hear them? Yes and no. The majority of the visual and auditory noise of brand output is average because brands often fail to deliver two things: something different and a human-to-human connection.
Rise Above the Noise
Start by putting people first (including yourself) and giving people the truth in a remarkable way. Think of it like this: Brand loyalty is easily being exchanged with people-to-people loyalty. Our friends and family (with whom we're predisposed to be loyal) recommend or dissuade us from trying a new product or service. We look to social sites (like YouTube, Pinterest, and Reddit) for more reviews and DIY directions. When we want the word on the street about a particular topic or a discussion we're interested in, we look to the personal and professional blogs and articles written by the most successful people in that particular niche. Today, we are won over by people and are loyal to people, not necessarily brands.
Loyalty is also driven by how much you're willing and able to innovate by striking new ground, to connect with your audience, consistently meet their needs, and tell others why your message matters. This is a challenge because the minute your audience can get the same thing from another author or source (more cheaply and easily), they'll leave. So you have to stay ahead of your niche, but it's well worth it.
For example: Typical articles written by Author A will be easily be replaced by another typical article written by Author B - both of which can be easily forgotten by your audience. In walks Author C, who writes an innovative, truthful article that connects with readers. This pushes Author A and B into irrelevant oblivion. Eventually, Author A and B will regurgitate what Author C had said, but it's no problem because Author C is already creating the next big thing.
How to Connect and Innovate
  • Average Be Gone
First, stop contributing to the average noise and create things that are remarkable. You may find writing content about topics that others in your niche are covering to be comfortable and safe, but there's just one problem: if it's safe, then it's probably average too. From a business and marketing standpoint, average is catastrophic. Average simply won't cut it because (to reiterate here) there's so much of it saturating every niche and you need to rise above the noise.
Drop the mindset that you need to drop your prices, offer all of your ebooks for free, or even meet the baseline needs channeled by everyone else in your niche. Repeat: No more average content. Be remarkable. It is not your job to merely serve information. If it was, you'd be a faceless encyclopedia. Your job is to connect with your audience and that connection will foster loyalty. Write something worth talking about and make it remarkable.
  • Take Initiative
Next, have a vision and take initiative. Don't wait for someone else to tell you what to do and what to write. Start by cultivating your "how did they do that" mindset and then create a vision of innovation. Stop accepting what currently is and start questioning. What is it? How was it done? Does it have to be this way? How can it be improved? Better yet, how can I (that's you) position a ground breaking change that will lead to better results? Cultivating this mindset will give your efforts sustainability beyond the first, second, or third triumph.
Scared? Unless of course someone's life and well-being is literally in your hands, be okay with failure. Are you going to fail? Maybe, but more importantly, you've opened yourself up to succeed. Simply remember: Failure isn't final and it's an opportunity. If you write an article that doesn't resonate with readers today, write another (better) one tomorrow. Shut down your fear to think long enough for a solution. Once you've got it, feel free to bug out if you still feel the need. Most times, the feeling of fear will pass if you continue moving forward, but the key is to take the initiative. It will never be given, you have to take it yourself.
  • Be a Person
Change your thinking to connect with people. You are not a brand. You are a person. You have likes. You have dislikes. You are mind-numbingly bored by things. You're passionate about things. So is your audience. Use these things to be the powerhouse that fires up your articles.
In addition, article writing and creating good content is not technical writing, nor is it conveying news passively. To really connect with readers, write something worth talking about, that has a valuable core message, and resonates with readers. To do this, be absolutely truthful through incorporating emotion (fear, joy, anger, love, etc.) as well as telling a story through your content like a personal anecdote.
Finally, be confident. Confidence in your message and clearly stating your UVP (Unique Value Proposition) will compel your audience to act and give them a hand in discussing it with others.
Ready? Let go of the concept that readers hold to brands. They hold to your remarkable ideas and extraordinary stories. Once you've taken the initiative to lead and are confident in the originality of your own message, all you'll have to do is spread the word.

Become a Better Manager

Become a Better Manager: Writing, Excuses, and Solutions EzineArticles.com Logo

Using Every Excuse in the Book NOT to Write?
You're a manager. Perhaps you may not be the person responsible for controlling a company, but you're the manager answerable to your own professional and personal success - including writing.
Own that title: Manager. Allow it to permeate your mindset. Take control.
Next: Become an EFFECTIVE manager. Actively pursue your goals, alleviate stress, be happier, and move closer to achieving your dreams.
I know. You're thinking, "Yeah, but it's not that easy." So what? It's life. Is it supposed to be easy? Would you feel a sense of pride or accomplishment in doing it if it was easy? To quote Marie Curie, pioneer physicist and chemist:
Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something, and that this thing, at whatever cost, must be attained.
Have the confidence and perseverance to cultivate your gift by becoming a better manager of it.
Excuses Holding You Back and Effective Solutions
Problem: "I'm overwhelmed ..."
Effective Manager Solution:
Trim the fat. Identify your goals and then list your priorities by importance, beginning with those that actually need your attention and then those that are superfluous to your goal. Lose the tasks that are not required or contribute the least value. And be honest with yourself. Are you really overwhelmed? Perhaps you're overcommitted and may need to practice saying "I can't at this time, but can I take a rain check?" Maybe your vigilant watch over Twitter and Facebook throughout the day can be limited to 20 minutes (once a day). Track your time for a period of a week and determine what you're doing with your time as well as where you can turn areas of low value into great value.
Problem: "I end up procrastinating ..."
Effective Manager Solution:
I'd like to begin this with a "you can do it" sentiment, but you and I both know that's not going to work. You lack motivation. If you're really procrastinating to an extent that's affecting your ability to work toward your dreams, than there may be two areas that you need to address: (1) Are you bingeing on technology like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, BuzzFeed, Netflix, Podcasts, YouTube, etc.? It may be time for a digital detox. (2) Is it really something you want to do? You should be passionate about what you do and what you want to write about, so write about those topics that fire you up. Reevaluate your goals and plans.
Problem: "People ... ugh!"
Effective Manager Solution:
Co-workers, friends, family - people can be seem like an obstacle in your path. Change your thinking: These same people can quite possibly be there to SUPPORT you on your journey. Can you delegate tasks to them? Can you use a negative experience as an anecdote for a great article to share with readers? Can you brainstorm with them or even co-write with them?
Problem: "I'm afraid of being judged negatively ..."
Effective Manager Solution:
Criticism is a part of anything that is in the public eye: articles, desserts, movies, fashion, etc. You can use criticism to your advantage. Listen to what is being said and accept it. Avoid being defensive and consider the source: Are they a respected individual who is well-informed on the topic or a toxic hate-monger? If you made a mistake, then be gracious: admit the mistake and move on. Life's too short and it's not supposed to be easy.
Problem: "I'm not sure it's a good idea ..."
Effective Manager Solution:
Do your due diligence: research, ask questions, etc. Ultimately, you can do all of the research and still not be entirely sure whether it's a good idea or not. There's one absolute: You'll never know if you don't try. Have the confidence to make a few mistakes and have the perseverance to achieve your goals.
Being able to manage these problems can turn a very complicated dance into a beautiful waltz. You're the manager of your writing, professional, and personal goals; start acting like one. Seize this opportunity now and start dancing your waltz today.

Ignorance Is Not Bliss

Ignorance Is Not Bliss: How to Garner Authoritative Knowledge EzineArticles.com Logo

"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." - Derek Bok
Vague information isn't just frustrating; it can be dangerous to both your readers and your credibility. Anyone can dole out generic information that they found on the Internet, but it doesn't make them an expert. Providing ambiguous content or information that's already saturating the market can achieve the opposite effect. It may make you appear uniformed. And that ignorance (even if it's just the perception of ignorance) is an expensive waste of time and money.
Let's take a step back for a second: An expert is someone who has authoritative knowledge in their niche that has been garnered through prolonged or intense experience. If you are an expert in a field who lacks extensive insight on a particular topic or you're out-of-touch with trends in your niche, you can gain first-hand experience to acquire knowledge! All you have to do is open up to continuous learning.
Before you throw an apple at my head, allow me to explain: continuous learning isn't about reentering the classroom or taking a course. It's about developing your reflection and inquiry skills that are necessary for critical thinking. It's also about turning your personal and professional life into your own laboratory for exploration and innovation - the ultimate cure for ignorance.
12 Tips to Create Your Own Innovation Laboratory
  • Be receptive by voraciously consuming information. Immerse yourself into a topic every day. Shadow those who are in the field, conduct interviews, experiment to gain first-hand experience, and connect with real people.
  • The better your mind and body is, then the better your ability to retain information. Make sure you drink enough water, get enough sleep, exercise, and consider eating healthier foods that target optimal brain function.
  • Stop multitasking. Research suggests multitasking can actually make you less effective. Focus on what's in front of you by eliminating distractions and practice better time management.
  • Refine your speed-reading skills. Speed reading will help you consume information faster by filtering out irrelevant information and put a spotlight on new and important information.
  • Get visual by mapping out a topic or create an information pyramid that builds up from the basics to the most complex point. Consider broader applications of your topic by analyzing the when, where, and why it is important as well as for whom and how.
  • Connect new topics to those already in your existing "knowledge bank." How does the new information fit into the framework of the old? Or is it a game changer?
  • Examine what you know and ask yourself probing questions. Anything that you can't answer or may not have a strong answer in, make an on-going research to-do list.
  • Read, listen, and watch. Increase the variety of ways you consume information through a multi-media approach that touches on both visual and auditory learning. Listen to lectures, read articles, watch videos, look at charts, and much more.
  • Collaborate and connect with your professional peers and actually engage in discussions with them rather than passively adding them to your network. Make valuable relationships that will grow.
  • Allow your interests and passions to cross pollinate. This will not only lend motivation, it will help you approach a topic with a new and more meaningful perspective.
  • Ditch your computer. Writing long hand has shown to stimulate ideas, so ditch the computer and other tech (when brainstorming at least!). Carry a notebook with you at all times to record meditative thoughts or jot down an idea that suddenly came to you.
  • Consider the source:
    • Who is providing the information (e.g., credible author vs. "admin")?
    • Why are they telling you the information (i.e., unbiased vs. self-serving)?
    • Are they providing evidence that supports their stance or are they dropping generalizations?

Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right'

Remind You To Believe In Yourself

If you wait for the perfect timing, you’ll end up waiting forever. It’s better just take what you’ve got, and get started.

Do not wait; the time will never be ‘just right.’ Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along. - George Herbert

NEW: Pin Your Articles on Pinterest EzineArticles.com Logo

Exciting Update! You Can Now Pin Your Articles on Pinterest More Easily Than Ever Before
You and your readers may have noticed a new addition to the social media sharing section of your articles: A brand new share this article on Pinterest button!
When one of Pinterest's 70-million+ users selects this button, a fresh image that's unique to the top-level category of your niche is shared with their followers and the entire Pinterest social sphere at large. To see the variety of fresh images assigned to the 30 top-level EzineArticles categories, check out our Browse EzineArticles.com Board on Pinterest.
Why Did We Make This Update?
First and foremost, whether you're on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, or LinkedIn, we want your articles to soar. On Pinterest, users do judge a book by its cover (the pinned image) and this presents a challenge for Expert Authors whose articles are text based.
The share this article on Pinterest button helps your articles become more pin and repin worthy. The new image helps your "cover" become more appealing by achieving the following:
  • The size of the image takes up more real estate on Pinterest than most Expert Author photos and Category images that were previously shared so your pin is more easily seen.
  • The image is more relatable and engaging than the static EzineArticles' category image.
  • You save time and money from having to create or purchase your own images to manually upload.
  • It increases the likelihood of sharing because the image is more visually stimulating than most author photos (it was reported that brand images without faces receive 23% more repins than images with faces).
Please note, these great benefits do not apply to the Pin on Pinterest button for browsers.
In the first week since we first launched this button, we've seen an increase of +97.69% Pins (based on the daily average of pins from EzineArticles.com) and an increase of +165.48% Pinners (based on the daily average number of people who pinned from EzineArticles.com). These numbers continue to climb.
Why Pinterest?
Pinterest is a web-based "pinboard" that allows its users to browse and share interesting information via images and video. You can use Pinterest as a point-of-entry for your current audience and new users by pinning your articles published on EzineArticles.com to build trust and increase your exposure.
It's important to remember that Pinterest is only 3 years old. Compared to Facebook, the current social media traffic referral leader that has 13 years on Pinterest, there's a lot of opportunity for growth in the growing Pinterest audience. According to Mashable.com, Pinterest has reportedly referred more traffic per user than Twitter, LinkedIn, and Reddit combined.
This update will only help you as far as catching the attention of the user on Pinterest. It's up to you to maintain their attention once they have clicked-through to your link by providing quality, original content that's transparent, informative, and valuable to the user.
So what are you waiting for? Let your audience know they can start pinning their favorite author's articles on Pinterest today!
