Bad Links Site

Bad Links: What Are Unnatural
Links From a Site?
EzineArticles.com Logo

Is Your Website User Friendly or Unnatural?
No matter how you spin it, unnatural links are traffic counterfeiters - they're deceitful, fake, and fail to meet the standards of quality and performance users expect.
As a result, stewards of the Internet are taking massive action against poor quality, unnatural links.
We've covered unnatural links pointing to* a website, but what about unnatural links pointing from a website?
It's important to note that unnatural links don't necessarily refer to your entire website; rather, unnatural links are pages on your website. Examples of unnatural links pointing from a website include the following:
  • Links in blog spam comments
  • Thin, placeholder, or copied content
  • Cookie cutter websites and doorway pages
Ensure your website is working for you and not against you with these 7 unnatural link prevention methods!
Top 7 Unnatural Link Prevention Tips for Links Pointing From Your Website
  1. Monitor and Block Spam: User-generated content in forums, blogs, guestbook pages, etc. can be a blessing and a curse. High-quality interactions, comments, and reviews are always rewarded; however, user-generated content is prone to spam. Eradicate spam using prevention tools (e.g., spam blocking plugins) as well as actively monitor your platform (e.g., review links from guest comments and remove their links if you've found poor quality).

  2. Avoid Creating Parked Pages: Parked pages or parked domains lack quality content. Typically, these pages don't have user-oriented content because the parked pages either reserve a domain name, redirect the user, or the registrant's ownership of the page has expired. Superficial use of parked pages to force unnatural page rank by creating several parked pages and then redirecting users to a main website is abhorred. Ensure quality content is on your website, regularly renew your domain registration, or create a plan of action to close out your registration and properly redirect users from former websites.

  3. Own Your Website: Free Hosts and Dynamic DNS Providers are prone to spammy content. Even if your pages on these free hosting websites are of the highest caliber, the sheer amount of spam that shares your free host will pull down your rank (and your ability to be searched by users). Users, publishers, and even search engines are more inclined to trust (and reward) website owners who have a vested interest in their website.

  4. Consider a User-Oriented Design: From navigation layout to aesthetic appeal, each page on your website (and any links from your website) should target user experience. Invest in the design of your website. Avoid affiliate pages, doorway pages**, and cookie cutter websites that may negatively impact user experience and therefore your page rank.

  5. Perpetuate Quality: Content that's thin, derivative, spun, copied and/or even plagiarized offers little to no added value for users. We can't say this enough: Always provide engaging, quality content for the user.

  6. Don't Sit on a Hack: If any or all of your pages have been hacked to display spammy content or links by a third party, then take action to fix it right away! Clean up and secure your website to protect your users and your brand.

  7. Cease Spamming and Black Hat SEO: If you practice spinning, cloaking, scraping, hiding text, keyword stuffing, egregious redirecting, and other unnatural, deceptive, or manipulative outbound linking, then you're contributing to the creation of pure spam. Stop these toxic methods immediately and begin building a website and platform based on quality measures that target user experience.
What does targeting a great user experience do for you? Better engagement, higher conversions, more exposure, and increased traffic. Use these tips to start building a better quality website. What methods have you found work for you? What toxic website practices have you stumbled into that you’d like to warn fellow Expert Authors about? Click here to share your comments – we’d love to hear from you!

100 Words Every Expert Author Should Know

100 Words Every Expert Author Should Know Part II EzineArticles.com Logo

To "Know" vs. To "Use"
In our previous post, we featured a list of 100 words compiled by the EzineArticles Editorial Team.
The Origins of the List
Only some of the words were inspired by our Editors' love for the English language (such as "ballyhoo"). A majority of the words were inspired by writing terminology (such as "simile") as well as several words new writers are recommended to learn (such as "precipitous") prior to their advancement into writing professions.
Should you use all of these words in your articles?
Of Course Not!
While it could be done, you would be hard pressed to use the word "homonym" in an article discussing gastric bypass surgery or the importance of drain cleaning equipment.
Our recommendation with this list was to get to know these words and even use them to "spice up" your writing when the occasion arose. In our excitement to share the list with you, we neglected to clarify the following - how this list benefits you and your readers:
  • Expanding your grasp of the English language will help you create a stronger message to communicate to various audiences.
  • Understanding how to apply the various writing terms will help you improve your writing style.
You're the Expert
You are the authority in your niche and the language you use is a reflection of your credibility. With practice and time, you've discovered the keys to writing a message that both reaches your audience and reflects your credibility as an Expert Author. You know better than anyone what words are the right words for your target audience based on your experience in what converts prospective audiences into customers or followers.
What you also know is to use discretion in order to convey your message memorably while avoiding turning your informative article into a gaudy display of arrogance. Based on your feedback, you've asserted that the 100 words recommended by our Editors are not fit for your audience. However, these words may be of use to you if you've wanted to hone your own writing skills.
Understanding these words doesn't give you a badge of elitism - that won't get your articles read. Knowing these words will help you broaden your writing skills to better apply your message. For example: Knowing the meaning of "irony" will help you avoid misusing the phrase. Understanding the "metaphor" behind "a penny earned is a penny saved" may help you convey your message. Writing in your audience's "vernacular" will help you connect with your audience.
Word Usage Best Practices
  • Always - we repeat - always write for your audience. Topics, style, language, demographics, etc. - these are all factors you should consider in your writing style.
  • Use their words unless your audience shares the same technical language and background as you. Simple and short is always better.
  • If instructing in your article, keep it short. No one ever said paragraphs MUST be 4-5 sentences to be effective. Shorter paragraphs work well and can be easily digested.
  • Cut the fluff. Be clear. Wordy is not better. It's confusing.
Will you use plain, simple words the majority of the time in your writing? Yes. Knowing when and where to place more specific language is the art of writing and engaging your audience. Write what you know, but never stop expanding on what you do know.
We thoroughly enjoyed everyone's comments! Thank you all for weighing in on the topic and if you're new to this topic, please click here to visit the original post.

The Top Punctuation Howlers
Grammar Style Guide
EzineArticles.com Logo

Why Punctuation Matters
Next to common grammatical errors, like spelling mistakes (alot vs. a lot) and misused words (loose weight vs. lose weight), punctuation is often overlooked, but it shouldn't be.
Punctuation makes a huge impact! Take for instance this popular example of the power of punctuation:
An English professor wrote the following words on the chalkboard and asked the students to punctuate it correctly:
"A woman without her man is nothing"
All of the males in the class wrote:
"A woman, without her man, is nothing."
All of the females in the class wrote:
"A woman: without her, man is nothing."
Punctuation is powerful.
You can harness this power to attract new readers and keep your current readers engaged with the free Top Punctuation Howlers PDF guide.
Unlike other style guides that imprison your writing or as one author put it, cause you to "type on eggs," Top Punctuation Howlers is easy to understand with its plethora of examples and open-writing style recommendations.
It's designed to help you strengthen your writing skills, no matter if you're ...
  • an exclamation point junky!!!!

Use This Basic Guide

Frustrated by HTML? Use This Basic Guide for Writers EzineArticles.com Logo

Want Greater Control Over the Presentation of Your Articles?
Your audience wants quality content they can easily read. Using bolded headers, lists, and blockquotes can "hook, line, and sinker" your readers' attention on you and your message. However, formatting text in a web browser isn't as easy or as familiar as formatting it in a text-editing program like Microsoft Word or using a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) text editor.
This is where basic knowledge of coding can give you an edge. HyperText Markup Language (HTML) gives you greater control over the framework and structure of your articles to help you reel in your readers' interest.
HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is used to format information to be displayed in a web browser by adding style to plain text and makes it easier for visitors to read.
Discover how to use HTML to format your quality, original articles with the HTML Basics graphic as your guide! Simply click on the graphic below for a close up of this post online.

Should You Learn More Code?
Did you know that kids are learning HTML like this as early as 8 years old? Imagine the intricate web design and logic they will be able to achieve at 18!
In her article, Why Everyone Should Learn to Code: An Event Recap, Madeline McSherry of Slate magazine stated, "Coding is the hottest skill on the job market, the modern-day language of creativity, and a powerful force in the economy." If you feel a bit behind the HTML-learning curve, there are dozens of resources available to add coding to your list of skills. These newly acquired skills will not only aid you in writing better articles, but it will help you improve your website to enhance the user experience as well as prevent you from becoming obsolete in your niche.
If you're starting out in HTML, we'd recommend finding resources like the L2Code HTML app, which provides an intuitive and effective way to easily learn basic HTML coding skills right on your iPhone or iPad.
What coding resources do you use and recommend? Visit this post online to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!

Back to School Attitude

Writing Better Articles
With a Back-to-School Attitude
EzineArticles.com Logo

Apply the basics of education to your article writing practice.
Depending on where you live, the school year has already begun, or will shortly, and another season of formal education begins anew.
Education has evolved over the years to become an arguably effective system of passing knowledge and skills onto others. Article writing is very much like school in that your articles are essentially lessons you're teaching to your readers.
If you approach your writing with the same attitude a good teacher (or student) approaches school, your chances for success will increase dramatically. Here are some lessons we can take from the world of formal education.
6 Back-to-School Basics for Expert Authors
  • Develop a Lesson Plan - Just like in school, you don't want to dive into your article writing without a lesson plan. Develop a plan, called an Editorial Calendar, to map out exactly what you're going to teach your readers and in what order. Then assign each article (lesson) a date. Provided you follow your plan, your readers should approach your Resource Box feeling educated and enlightened.
  • Sit Quietly at Your Desk - Writing high-quality articles is most efficient, and quick, when you're in "The Zone" (as we like to call it). The Zone is that mental state where the words just seem to flow from your keyboard. Getting into The Zone can often be very elusive, but there are some things that will help.
    1. Designate your Writing Spot - This could be a desk, a table, a couch, or whatever gets you into The Zone. Always use this for your writing and your brain will slip into The Zone whenever you sit down there.
    2. Create a Ritual - Always do things the same way as you prepare to write. Maybe it means putting on music and getting yourself a cup of coffee. Whatever it is, embracing it each time you write will help you prepare mentally for the task ahead.
    3. Avoid Distractions - Turn off the phone, email, texting, everything. If you're going to write, be 100% immersed into the process.
  • Master the Basics - In "teaching" your readers, you should always demonstrate best practices. This includes:
    1. Reading - Be certain that you proofread your articles before you submit them! Read and reread them to ensure that you're delivering quality articles.
    2. Writing - It is vitally important that your writing be top notch and free of grammatical and spelling errors. Anything less will severely diminish your credibility as an author and could result in your reader simply clicking away from your article.
    3. Arithmetic - Keep an eye on your word count. EzineArticles Editorial Guidelines aside, it's suggested that you keep your articles between 500 and 700 words. Why? Because this is the optimal length for delivering high-quality information without risking your reader will go elsewhere due to the length.

  • Study in Your Niche - As far as your reader is concerned, you ARE the expert in your field. Act like it by studying everything you can in your niche and applying that knowledge to your articles. And never, ever write about something you don't know. An article with inaccurate information could ruin your credibility instantly.
  • Involve Yourself in Extracurricular Activities - Studying within your niche will only get you so far. Be sure to also spend time outside your field of expertise while, simultaneously, keeping it in the back of your mind. Look for analogies, comparisons, and connections to other areas of interest that could be used as the basis for your next article.
  • Choose Fill-in-the-Blank Over Essay - In essence, articles are just like the essays you wrote in school. Writing essays can be challenging and time consuming. On the other hand, filling in the blanks can be a lot quicker, easier, and often produce higher quality scores ... ahem, results.
That's why EzineArticles created our Article Templates. These templates not only give you great ideas, they also provide a fill-in-the-blanks PDF that provides the article's style, structure and section topics. By simply filling in the blanks, you can create articles based on your expertise that your audience will love to read. Check out the free article template sample here. If you like it (and we know you will), go here and get the template sets you need to make your articles awesome!
The parallels between school and article writing could go on and on. Stop and think about some of the things you learned during those years and apply them to your article writing practices. You'll undoubtedly find that much of what your teachers shared back then can still be put to good use today.
Questions? Comments? What's your favorite article template? Anything you'd like to see in the future? Click here to share your input - we'd love to hear from you!

Steps to Achieve Greater Satisfaction

7 Steps to Achieve Greater Satisfaction in Article Writing EzineArticles.com Logo

Writing unhappily will only lead to more frustration and an unsuccessful future as an Expert Author.
Get pumped for your writing sessions and feel so much more fulfilled when you take a break with these 7 steps.
7 Steps to Greater Satisfaction
1. Set Goals
Most people have a very romantic notion of an author: crumpled clothes, frazzled hair, some sort of smoky haze, and erratic bursts of energy devoted to writing. This typically isn't the case. While taking risks and not suppressing great ideas can be beneficial, greater satisfaction can be won by maintaining a rhythm and staying on task with effective planning. Set goals to track your progress and motivate yourself by celebrating each milestone. Working towards goals not only activates positive feelings, but can also suppress negative feelings. Use any anger you have built up to tackle one of your goals! The feeling of accomplishing a task you set yourself is beyond rewarding.
2. Anticipate Future Moments
Happiness is just around the corner. If you anticipate an enjoyable moment, the results can have a meaningful impact on your path. Feel more relaxed in your writing process by visualizing where you would like to be in the next days, weeks, or years to come. Think of running a marathon: When you see the finish line ahead of you, you have a sense of accomplishment as you think of each step you take toward getting there and once you've crossed that line - it's finished - you did it! Stay focused and capture that feeling of accomplishment to stay motivated.
3. Timing is Key
Have you ever given thought to the absolute BEST time to write? It's different for everyone and the key is discovering the time of day you're most productive and positively inclined to write. Very few can write brilliantly whenever they want to, no matter what's going on around them or the time of day. Find what time works best for you so you're not struggling against the clock.
4. Include Bits of Positivity
It's next to impossible to strip your articles of any bias, but you can ensure your articles are constructive and positive. Prepare by creating a list of good events that happened in your day. Allow the positivity to sink in and include these experiences in your articles. For example, if you're writing a health and fitness article, you can integrate personal experiences that resonate with your advice. Silver lining moments can often reach readers better than fear mongering. A little hope and positivity can go a long way.
5. Write Yourself Happy
Stress can take its toll on your writing. Worries, tasks, bills, etc. - stressful thoughts can latch on and be difficult to overcome. If you are searching for some satisfaction in your life in general, then try writing the stress away! You may have other tactics to let off steam, but writing has been a proven therapeutic tactic and it may help you keep the negative results of stress off of others. Exchange seats with your audience (you're the audience attempting to solve a problem): Write down your stresses or problems. Ready? Switch seats again (you're the Expert Author) and systematically pick through each stress, provide a list of solutions, and reframe each problem by turning them into a positive and constructive goal.
6. Try Something New
Shake up stale routines by trying something new on a consistent basis. Some people like to cook a brand new meal each week to keep things at the dinner table interesting. You can do the same in writing! Write in a new style or on a new subject. Switching it up will help you generate new ideas and lead to breakthroughs in your writing.
7. Find Your Reality
Negative feedback from your peers can surely be draining, and not just criticism on work you have completed. If someone says (including yourself) that you can't do something or it's not possible, remember this: YOU can decide what's possible for you as well as where joy starts and ends. That's why goals are so important. They keep you on task and ensure appropriate boundaries are set. Your reality can be as big or small as you want it to be. Think of it as a gate you put around your environment. You can certainly move the gate in or out as you choose - it's not set in stone. Be creative and avoid overthinking. If you believe you can do it, then go for it!
Follow your bliss and enjoy what you do! Writing takes time, patience, and a strong mind to continue when you're interrupted. As long as you keep at it, there's no telling how far you will go and what tips you'll pick up along the way. There's no greater satisfaction in writing than knowing you gave it your all and had the right mindset going in. Stay focused on your goals and achieve great satisfaction in your writing!
How do you find your bliss in your writing? Have questions or comments? Click here to share your feedback - we'd love to hear from you!
