... Or Your Next Set of Articles!
"I'm starting my own restaurant ... what are the best professional-grade kitchen appliances?" There's a review for that.
"Finished this book ... what should I read next?" There's a review for that.
"I'm going on vacation ... where are the best accommodations?" There's a review for that.
"Who's more peaceful ... Dalai Lama or Mohandas Gandhi?" Yes, there's a review for that too.
More and more consumers are reading reviews.
Reviews help them make purchasing decisions, consider using a service,
find a volunteer-driven organization to help others, determine whether
they should apply to a company, or answer all of those existential
questions on their minds. Take advantage of this insatiable
consumer-driven need for reviews using the following tips.
Top 8 Review Types
Here are the most popular types of reviews you can write to expand your article portfolio:
- Restaurants
- Movies
- Books
- Business
- Products
- Services
- Websites
- Travel
Relevance Is Key
There's a catch: You must stay relevant in your
niche. By writing content that's not relevant to your niche, you're
reviewing on the same level as anyone else writing a review. Take
advantage of this opportunity to build your exposure and increase your
authority as an expert in your niche by choosing relevant topics.
Who wants to limit reviews to products and
services in their niche? Be creative and proactive by considering what
review topics would be most informative to your audience. Allow the
needs and wants of your audience to be your guide by providing them with
solutions and tools. Here are a few examples of how you might write
relevant reviews beyond the obvious:
- Travel a lot on business? Review local businesses and services to help fellow travelers in your area of expertise.
- Movie or book addict? Review relevant entertainment from your perspective as an expert in your niche.
- Out-of-town conference attendees? Review the top 7 restaurants in
town to help the out-of-town attendees get what they need per your
niche's special requirements.
3 Tips to Writing Reviews
- Original and Informative: As always, target your
audience's needs and wants with valuable, unique, and descriptive
content that either helps them achieve a goal or solve a problem. In
your reviews, emphasize the experience your reader is likely to expect,
pros and cons, and any insider knowledge. Provide useful and interesting
information that's accurate, balanced, and constructive.
- Rein in Bias: Unbiased content and authenticity are critical
to reviews. Blatantly attacking a brand is unacceptable. Overwhelmingly
promotional "reviews" - spammers, we're looking at you - are also
unacceptable. Consumers are smart, practical, and not easily convinced.
They can see a biased review (whether prejudiced against or invoked
favoritism) a mile away. Rein it in.
- Consider Length: Depending on the type of review, you'll want
to ensure you aren't overkilling with too much information that’s
readily accessible or underestimating the intricacies of the topic of
your review. Consider what information the user will need and discard
any superfluous details that will crowd their ability to make an
informative decision. Best lengths for reviews target 500-700 words -
enough to be informative, but short enough for quick digestion.

"... establish your voice and brand ..."
The marketing principle of giving away of something of value
for free in order to sell something else, resonated with me. It is also
a way to establish your voice and brand in a more structured
professional manner than typical social media i.e. Facebook, Twitter, et
al. They have their place and are useful to an author/writer. However,
the growth of the internet creates a huge demand for quality content. I
still think the key is to write "quality content". If it is well
written, accessible, and of timely interest to people it will get plenty
of attention. EzineArticles is a wonderful reservoir of good content on
many topics.
